President Anneela Ahmed

Meet our President, Aneela Ahmed

I was born in Bradford and relocated to Pakistan at the age of eight with my mother and sisters, being the eldest among five siblings. After ten years in Pakistan, I returned to the UK aged 18. Eight months following my return, I experienced the loss of my father, who passed away suddenly at the age of 49. This event necessitated that I assume the responsibilities as the head of our family. The Leadership journey had started!

To support my family, I maintained multiple jobs simultaneously and took on roles to ensure my sisters received comprehensive education; each attended school, college, and university, eventually establishing themselves in their own families. Although I was unable to complete my education earlier, I gained my A levels at twenty-eight while bringing up my daughter, who accompanied me to evening classes. My career has spanned numerous organizations and roles.

In 1997, I joined the West Yorkshire Metropolitan Ambulance Service as an Emergency Medical Dispatcher. This job had my name written all over it!  As the only Asian woman in this position and one of the longest-serving employees, I had discovered my true vocation. In 2019, I was honored as the Dispatcher of the Year for the UK and Ireland, becoming the first BAME female recipient in the award's history

Throughout my 25-year tenure with the ambulance service, I assisted in the delivery of forty-one babies, guided hundreds through CPR procedures, managed thousands of emergency calls, and received numerous commendations for my composure and effectiveness under pressure. I retired from the service in 2022.

For over forty-two years, I have actively engaged with local issues in Bradford, advocating for community well-being and safety. My dedication to public service includes serving as an Elected Member of the Council from 2016 to 2024.

Upon retirement, I embarked on a new path with Rotary, initially as a member of the RCC (Rotary Community Corps) and later advancing to full membership with Adventurers in June 2024. Service before self has always been the guide in my life, this I learnt from my parents.

I assumed the Presidency of Adventurers in 2025, a position I continue to hold with aspirations to serve until 2027. In 2026, I was privileged to receive a Paul Harris Fellowship (PHF). I’m a School Governor, and a member and trustee of several community organisations. Who said retirement can’t be exciting?

My guiding principle is: "Never let anyone dim the light of your dreams. Shine brightly, make a difference, and carry the torch of service for all to see."
